bb7 is looking for a Senior Optical Engineer to work with one of our clients that designs and manufactures scientific instruments for laboratory and process control applications serving a variety of markets. The focus of this position will be to design and develop the next generation of microscopes.

Responsibilities

  • Develop prototype beam control systems used to integrate ultrafast lasers with existing instruments, from initial concept through bench testing and final optical assemblies. Specific optical technologies include:
    • Harmonic generation
    • Power modulation
    • Beam scanning
    • Pulse picking
    • Active and passive beam stabilization
  • Produce top-level engineering design documents for electro-optical/opto-mechanical systems, including drawings for custom optics, opto-mechanical requirements, top-level mechanical layout, and electrical and software interface specifications
  • Design custom long-range microscope optics and optomechanical assemblies to work in conjunction with laser control systems
  • Participate in cross functional design reviews of complex mechanical, optical, and electronic assemblies
  • Work closely with electrical, software, and mechanical engineers to design, procure, and test prototype systems
  • Specify off-the-shelf imaging optics, cameras, and ultra-violet illumination sources
  • Support the Service and Manufacturing departments via hands-on troubleshooting and phone support as needed
  • Maintain a safe workplace for the development of ultrafast, ultraviolet laser and imaging systems
  • Document new laser sources and manufacturing procedures by maintaining and implementing laser Standard Operating Procedures
  • Perform routine inspections to ensure that laser-safe practices are being effectively implemented and adhered to
  • Complete CE/ANSI testing for Class 1 certification
